Google has released their new approach to mobile-responsive design comes into play. As announced on their blog back in February, Google rankings will now be affected by your websites ability to be mobile-friendly.
If you’ve got Google Analytics (which yes, you should do) you’ll probably see a good chunk of your traffic usually comes from mobile users. That website link on your Instagram bio? Chances are your readers are going to go straight to it via their iPhones.
If your website isn’t designed to work well on mobiles, it probably looks a bit messy on your phone at the moment – website’s that aren’t designed for mobile use look the same as how your site would look on a desktop, just a bit smaller. For tablet use, that’s fine – a bit of zooming in and out never hurt anyone, but on a phone it’s a little difficult.
The design of your site aside, the big change with this announcement is that your website will most likely be negatively impacted if you don’t have a mobile-friendly site. All that SEO you’ve invested in might be suddenly made redundant by this new algorithm.
If you’re unsure of whether your website is already designed for mobile use, Google has been kind enough to send out this little web test page. If your site isn’t looking to snazzy, don’t stress. Regardless of what platform your site is run on, there are plenty of themes and templates available designed specifically for mobiles that you can install as an add on.
To those people who’s websites I’ve been lucky enough to work on, yes, yours are all good. Phew!
